I came across this passage from Baltasar Gracian's The Art of Worldly Wisdom ~ "Know Yourself. Know your talents and capacity, in judgement and inclination. You can not master yourself unless you know yourself. There are mirrors for your face, but none for the mind. Let careful thought serve as your substitute".
One of the main reasons I decided to study psychology in college was to better understand myself. I have also found that reading the stories and experiences of others and then honestly contemplating what I would have done in that same predicament, also allows me to get a clearer picture of who I am and what I stand for. So time alone each day is essential for me, so that I may review my own experiences and analyze my actions in order to better understand myself ~ so I can decide what beliefs are truly important to me and which I can leave behind.
